Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about the AI image crop tool: formats and limits, privacy, features, export quality and what to do when something misbehaves. Every answer below describes how the tool actually behaves today.

Getting started

Is PixelCrop really free?

Yes. Every feature of the crop tool is free to use — there is no premium tier, no watermark and no cap on how many images you process. You also never need to sign up for anything.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no login and no email required — open the page and start cropping. Because nothing is stored on a server, there is no account to create in the first place.

What image files can I crop?

The tool accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP files — drag and drop them in, browse for the file, or paste from the clipboard with Ctrl + V. The export format does not have to match the input: a JPEG photo can be saved back out as PNG or WebP, and screenshots are usually best kept as PNG. You can try it with your own file in the AI image crop tool.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes — the limit is 20 MB per image. Images larger than about 24 megapixels are scaled down slightly after loading so editing stays smooth, and the crop is taken from that adjusted copy. For typical photos, screenshots and web graphics the limit is rarely noticeable.

Privacy and security

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Decoding, cropping and exporting all happen locally in your browser using the Canvas API, and the site has no upload endpoint at all. Nothing about your image is transmitted anywhere — the privacy policy documents this in full detail.

What do you store about me?

Practically nothing. The only thing saved is your light or dark theme preference in your browser's localStorage, and it never leaves your device. There are no analytics scripts, no tracking cookies and no advertising on the site.

Is it safe for private or client images?

Yes. Because nothing leaves your device, the tool is suitable for screenshots with personal data, client work under NDA and any image you would rather not hand to a remote server. Close the tab and the image is gone from memory.

Features

What aspect ratios are available?

Free crop plus seven locked presets: 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2 and 2:3. When a preset is active, the crop box keeps those proportions no matter how you move or resize it, so what you frame is exactly what exports.

How does smart crop work?

The Smart crop button analyzes visual energy — edges and areas of detail — across your image on your own device, then proposes a crop window that keeps the most active region in frame, slightly biased toward the center. It is classic image analysis rather than machine learning, and it is meant as a starting suggestion you fine-tune by hand. The full workflow is described in How It Works.

How far can I zoom?

Zoom runs from 100% to 400% of the fit-to-screen view. Use the slider, the zoom buttons or your mouse wheel, and drag the image itself to pan while you are zoomed in. Zooming changes only your view — the crop is always taken from the original pixels.

Can I rotate an image?

Yes. The rotate button turns the image in 90-degree clockwise steps, and the crop is applied after rotation, so what you see in the editor is exactly what you download. Combined with the ratio presets, this makes it easy to turn a landscape photo into a portrait crop.

Quality and formats

Will cropping reduce image quality?

No — the crop is taken from the full-resolution source image, so no pixels are lost beyond the area you remove. PNG export is lossless, while JPEG and WebP exports use a quality slider that you control. The result panel shows the exact output dimensions and file size before you download.

Which export format should I choose?

Choose PNG for screenshots, images with text and anything that needs transparency, because it is lossless. Choose JPEG when you want small photo files with the broadest compatibility. WebP is the modern middle ground — compact output with transparency support — and every current browser can display it.

Can I crop a PNG with transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas are preserved when you export as PNG or WebP. If you export to JPEG instead, transparent regions are flattened to a solid color, because the JPEG format does not support transparency.

Troubleshooting

My image won't load — what's wrong?

First check the file type and size: the tool supports JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP files under 20 MB. If the file qualifies but still fails, try re-saving it from the original app or loading a different file — occasional exports from other software use unusual encodings. You can also press Try a sample image to confirm the tool itself is working.

The download didn't start — what now?

Make sure the cropped preview is shown in the result view, then press the download button again. Some mobile browsers ask permission before saving files, so check for a notification or look in your downloads folder. If it still fails, try a different export format — switching between PNG, JPEG and WebP resolves most encoding quirks.

Can't find your answer here? The fastest way to check most things is to open the AI image crop tool and try it — it is free and nothing is uploaded. The workflow is explained step by step in How It Works, and the privacy policy covers data handling in detail.
